What to Expect at Your First Pain Management Appointment

What to Expect at Your First Pain Management Appointment

Your first pain management appointment centers on three things: a detailed conversation about your pain history, a physical examination, and a preliminary treatment plan. Most initial visits last between 45 and 60 minutes. You will leave knowing the suspected cause of your pain and the next step. No procedures happen on day one unless previously arranged.

What Should You Bring With You?

The visit works best when you arrive prepared. Gather your records before the appointment rather than the morning of. Helpful items include:

  • A photo ID and insurance card
  • A list of current medications and dosages
  • Prior imaging, such as X-rays or MRI discs
  • Records from doctors who treated the same pain
  • A referral form, if your insurance requires one

Arriving with imaging already in hand can shave weeks off your treatment timeline. Without it, your physician may need to order new scans and schedule a follow-up before making any recommendations.

What Questions Will the Physician Ask?

Expect specific, detailed questions rather than a quick once-over. Your answers shape the entire diagnostic picture, so honesty matters more than toughness. Chronic pain affects an estimated 24.3% of United States adults. The path each patient took to that point differs widely. Common questions we ask include:

  • When the pain started and what triggered it
  • Whether it stays in one place or radiates into both legs or arms
  • What makes it better or worse
  • How it affects sleep, work, and daily tasks
  • What treatments you have already tried

The more specific your answers, the more precise your diagnosis. Rating your pain on different days, noting flare-up patterns, and describing the sensation as burning, stabbing, or aching all sharpen the diagnosis.

What Happens During the Exam and After?

The physical exam tests strength, reflexes, flexibility, and the specific movements that reproduce your pain. From there, our physician explains the likely source and lays out options, which may range from medication adjustments and physical therapy to injections or nerve-based procedures.

Acute pain from a recent injury often resolves with conservative care. Pain that has persisted for months usually calls for a layered plan, and the full menu of pain conditions treated through interventional care is broader than most new patients realize. You should leave with a written or clearly stated plan, not a shrug.

Before finalizing any course of care, our physician may order additional diagnostic tests, such as updated imaging or nerve studies, to confirm the source of the pain. From there, our physician develops an initial treatment plan with you, starting with conservative options and adjusting based on how you respond.
